During the cold war, the Iron Curtain separated lands controlled by the old Soviet Union from 'western' countries. Austria was in the west, the Czech Republic in the east. On both sides of this 'Iron Curtain' each country produces amazing wines from two distinct regions: the 'Weinviertal' or 'Wine Quarter' of Lower Austria and the Mikulovská wine region of south Moravia. Both are steeped in viticultural tradition and history and are home to some incredibly beautiful villages and landscapes. Mikulov Wine Tour from Vienna Itinerary

Summer (May - Oct)

8:30am - Meet & greet
We meet at the westen entrance of Kaisermühlen-VIC u-bahn station for initial introductions before boarding our train. This is on the U1 red line, and takes around 10 minutes from the center of Vienna – see the map below for full details of how to get there.
Train ride
After cruising through north east Austria’s Weinviertal (wine quarter), we’ll grab our bikes and other equipment and start riding through the lovely countryside…
Border crossing & arrival into Mikulov
After crossing the international border into the Czech Republic, we’ll arrive to Mikulov, one of the most enchanting and romantic towns in the whole of central Europe! Choose to climb its Holy Hill for gorgeous views over the vineyard landscape, or just meander through the lovely old town center.
Winery tasting and cellar tour with local Moravian producer
After lunch in the old town, and having enjoyed some free time in the village, we’ll then visit a local vineyard and winery for an extensive and intimate exploration of Czech wines. You’ll be joining one of south Moravia’s finest producers right in the heart of the Mikulovská region to learn about modern Czech wine making, via an extensive wine tasting.
Approx 6:30pm - Arrive back to Vienna by train
After a full day of exercise and sampling the local goods we’ll circle our way back to our starting point to return our bikes and to head back to Vienna.

Iron Curtain Bike & Wine Tour Meeting Point

The tour meeting point is the western entrance to the 'Kaisermuhlen-VIC' u-bahn station. From the city center take the U1 red line and exit the train to the right. The correct entrance is the one with the 'Tabak' and 'Snack stop' directly opposite. If you are arriving by uber then please tell your driver to head to the 'Platz der Vereinten Nationen' and you will then see the u-bahn station entrance on arrival.
