General Tour Information

Info on how fit (or not) you need to be for our tours, how to dress & what else you might need to bring along.

The tour will go ahead in all weather conditions up until and including light patchy spells of rain. However, in the case of heavy rain or thunderstorms, for safety reasons we will not be going out on the water. There is also a very good chance that the vineyard hike will also be cancelled in these conditions. If this happens, we will offer you an alternative time and date for your tour or a full refund – whichever you prefer.

Absolutely not! Of course, these are active tours so we do expect a reasonable level of fitness in order that you are able to complete the tour without causing significant delays, but please be aware that every tour is designed to be accessible for as many people as possible. We do, however, understand that our itineraries may not be suitable for all, so if you have any further questions or concerns then please get in touch and we’d be happy to advise you.

Our Vienna Woods Wine Tour is a gentle 11km walk (mainly downhill, with just a couple of short steeper uphill sections). Regular breaks are built into the itinerary (including for tastings!).

Our Vienna Kayak Tour involves kayaking for about 2.5 of the alloted 3 hours. We’ll be paddling at a slow & steady pace and we’ll also take a break for a swim if the weather is good. We’ve had people of all ages and fitness levels join us, with no problems whatsoever!

Our Private Kayaking Tours are, of course, taken absolutely at your group’s pace, and typically involve paddling for around 2 and a quarter hours.

Our Wachau Valley Kayak & Wine Tour is for more advanced paddlers and thus requires a higher level of base fitness. We will be kayaking for around 6.5 hours of the alloted 11.

You don’t have to be Michael Phelps to come kayaking with us – but if you’re really uncomfortable in aquatic environments, then this probably isn’t the tour for you. Here’s a good tester – imagine you somehow fall out of your kayak as we’re paddling (you were trying to impress that cute guy/girl/husband/wife with your paddling skills).

Do you:

a) be cool, calm & collected, and climb back into your kayak immediately…

b) be cool, calm & collected, keep hold of your kayak, and alert your guide or the nearest person that you need some help to get back into your kayak…

c) totally freak out because you don’t really like water or getting wet, let go of your kayak, splash your arms all over the place, burn out your energy, and sink…

If your answer was ‘c’ then maybe come drink some wine with us instead 😉

Kayaking is a gentle and relaxing pursuit. It does not require great coordination, nor balance, but rather, a steady and consistent forwards rhythm. It is actually a pretty good upper body workout, particularly for the shoulders and back, and you’ll also be engaging your core (stomach muscles) a little bit as you pull yourself through the water.

Before we get on the water, we’ll go over some kayaking basics, and your guide will be on hand throughout to offer paddling tips & advice if you need any. So, in answer to the question, never having kayaked before should not be a problem to most people!

The Vienna Woods Wine Tour, the Wachau Valley Kayak & Wine Tour and the Semmering Mountain Railway Tour are all full day tours so you’ll definitely need to eat at some point! Lunch stops at restaurants are built into all of these. However, eating out isn’t compulsory, so feel free to bring your own food on any tour, if you wish.

Be advised that some establishments in the more remote parts of Austria may not accept cards, so it’s a good idea to bring cash with you.

Just use your common sense on this one by looking at the weather forecast on the day of your tour. Our kayaking tours are both operated predominantly over spring & summer so you shouldn’t need too much in the way of warm clothing, but, of course, on any given day the weather can turn (especially in April and October) so do come prepared nonetheless.

Vienna Kayak Tour & Wachau Valley Kayak & Wine Tour

I typically kayak in my swimming shorts, a t-shirt and a hat. Definitely bring an extra layer or two though and a towel, just in case the wind gets up and you’ve just been swimming, for example. Bring a light rain jacket in case there are a few spots of rain on the day. If you have flip flops or water shoes it would be a good idea to bring them for around the water edges and for when we’re getting in and out of our kayaks. Also a hat.

Vienna Woods Wine Tour

If the weather is sunny, I walk the vineyards in shorts, t-shirt and a hat. On chillier days light trousers and an extra layer are recommended too. We’ll be outside for most of the day, so layering up makes sense.

Kayaking tours – drinking water, hat & sun cream, towel, swimming gear, spare t-shirt, light trousers, flip flops/water shoes, cash.

Wine tour – rucksack, drinking water, hat & sun cream, warmer layer, comfortable footwear, cash.

Railway hike – rucksack, drinking water, warm but breathable clothes, wet weather jacket, comfortable footwear, cash.

All tours – a charged up phone/camera – you’ll almost certainly be taking lots of photos and once each tour begins there will be no more opportunities to power up.

Yes! We provide everyone with a 10 litre dry bag to keep your belongings dry (10l should be enough to fit a towel and a change of summer clothes). We also offer you a protective phone case to keep that dry while you’re taking photos.

Recommendations & Policies

Information relating to tour group numbers, cancellations & payments.

Because of our committment to only offering small-group public tours, we have limited space on them. It’s therefore a good idea to reserve in advance. You can try your luck the day before, of course, and we do take bookings up until the day before a scheduled tour, but we do recommend booking in advance, especially if you’re coming in a group.

The same goes for our private tours too, perhaps more so in fact, as availability is limited to just one group per alloted time.

Unless by special request as part of a private tour, or any other negotiated prior agreement, we won’t exceed the maximum number of 8 individual participants on any of our small-group public tours. Private tour numbers are limited to 6 individuals, so please get in touch if you want to organise a private tour for a larger group.

As long as you are physically fit enough to complete the tour at a reasonable pace, there are no upper age limits on any of our tours. Minimum age limits do apply. All wine tour and railway hike participants must be at least 18 years old on the day of the tour. If kayaking, participants must be at least 9 years old on the day of the tour, with anyone under the age of 15 being accompanied by a responsible adult in a two-person kayak only.

For our small-group Vienna Kayak Tour and our small-group Vienna Woods Wine Tour there are minimum numbers of participants required for us to operate (see the next question below). So, if you’ve tried to make a booking and haven’t been allowed, it’s probably because you’re the first person to make a booking on that particular day. We suggest you try again a bit later once more bookings have come in, or to get in touch with us.

For our small-group Vienna Kayak Tour we require a minimum number of just two people to operate. If booked privately, this will go ahead with just one person.

For our small-group Vienna Woods Wine Tour we require a minimum of just three people to operate. If booked privately, this will go ahead with just one person.

Our Wachau Valley Kayak & Wine Tour and our Semmering Railway Hike are only operated as private tours, so these can go ahead with just one person booked.

If we cancel:-

We will only cancel a tour due to extreme, and potentially dangerous, weather events (i.e. extended bouts of heavy rain, thunderstorms, heavy snow), severe injury or last-minute serious illness to your guide, or a lack of sufficient participants booked onto a tour. If we have to cancel, we’ll let you know as soon as we can.

If you cancel:-

Small-group public tours:

100% refund if cancelled more than 24 hours before the scheduled start of your tour. No refund is given for cancellations made less than 24 hours before your activity.

Private and bespoke tours:

If you decide to cancel a private booking you have made with us, you will receive:
  • a refund of 100% if you cancel a minimum of 4 weeks before the Scheduled Tour Date;
  • a refund of 50% if you cancel between 4 weeks and 10 days before the Scheduled Tour Date; and
  • a refund of 30% if you cancel between 10 days and 72 hours before the Scheduled Tour Date; and
  • no refund if you cancel within 72 hours before the Scheduled Tour Date.
Cancellations must be received by us via email in order to qualify for a refund.

To pay us in Euros:

Our online store uses one of the world’s leading integrated ecommerce payment platforms by Stripe. As such, we accept secure and encrypted card payment, including Visa, Mastercard, and American Express. For customized advance bookings (minimum 2 weeks before tour date) we also accept direct bank transfers & Transferwise payments. Just let us know when discussing your booking requirements.

To pay us in your own currency (USD, £, AUSD, NZD):

Because so many of our customers are from countries that don’t use the EURO, we’ve set up USD, Pound Sterling, AUSD & NZD payment accounts, so you can pay us in your own currency via direct bank transfer with no extra fees! We don’t want you to have to pay any more than the cost of your actual tour (i.e nothing on foreign transaction nor exchange fees to convert into Euros). Just let us know and we’ll send you our local bank details for your currency – you then do a local transfer to us using the real exchange rate (i.e the one you see on Google or xe.com) that day. Easy & fair! Only for use if booking a minimum of 2 weeks in advance of your tour date.
