Wachau Valley Kayaking & Wine Tour: An Active Day Trip From Vienna

Escape the crowded tour buses. Discover the hidden side of Austria’s most famous wine region on a guided paddle through the heart of the Danube.

Experience the UNESCO Wachau Valley from the Water

The Wachau Valley is a landscape of myth and legend, but most visitors only see it from a distance. Our Wachau Kayaking Tour puts you directly in the scenery. Starting close to the historic village of Melk, we utilize the river’s natural flow to glide downstream through this gorgeous UNESCO World Heritage site.

As you paddle, you’ll have an unobstructed view of the terraced vineyards that produce Austria’s finest white wines. You’ll pass directly beneath the ruins where Richard the Lionheart was held captive and see the iconic blue spire of Dürnstein rising from the riverbank. This is more than a tour; it’s a low-impact, sustainable immersion into Austrian history and nature.

Halfway through the day, we visit a hand-picked, family-run winery for a tasting of the region’s signature Riesling and Grüner Veltliner wines. During the summer months, you’ll also experience the famous Wachau Apricots—whether in the form of fresh fruit from the orchards we pass or a glass of local Marillenlikör. As always at Venture Vienna, we focus on ‘Slow Wine’ principles, supporting small producers who prioritize quality over quantity.

This private tour from Vienna, with our specialist kayak instructor and Austrian wine expert, showcases this amazing natural region like no other, and includes a relaxing paddle through the valley, a Wachau wine tasting, and an exploration of its beautiful medieval villages.

Wachau Valley Day Trip: Highlights & Inclusions

Wachau Kayaking Tour Itinerary

We’ll pick you up in Vienna directly from your hotel, or if you’re staying in the Wachau already we’ll pick you up there instead at 9am.

The first part of the tour takes us through west Wachau. Here it’s a little too cool for wine production, so the hills are covered in carpets of trees with castles and palaces sitting proudly atop many of the valley’s highest peaks. You’ll be in awe of the Wachau’s natural beauty from your privileged position, right at the heart of it on the Danube river!

The charming village of Spitz, located approximately half way through the valley, marks the beginning of the wine growing region. Noted for its classic expressions of dry Riesling, Austria’s signature wine Gruner Veltliner, and the wonderfully unique and earthy Neuburger, we’ll be visiting one of the best local, family-run wineries for a detailed wine tasting.

After continuing downstream briefly, we’ll take another break, this time for lunch in a small yet historically fascinating local hamlet (lunch not included).

The further east we paddle, the valley landscape transforms into visually stunning rows of steeply terraced medieval dry stone walls and vines, separated into hundreds of individual vineyard plots.

Picturesque Durnstein is the undisputed gem of the Wachau. The natural beauty and old world charm of this gorgeous hamlet is further enhanced by the legend of Richard the Lionheart King of England, imprisoned here in 1192 at the top of Durnstein castle, overlooking the Danube. During your free time here you’ll be able to climb the ruins of Durnstein Castle (if you wish!) to get some breath-taking views and photos over the river and the vineyard landscapes below.

After a full day of activity we’ll arrive back to Vienna around 7pm.

Frequently Asked Questions about our Wachau Valley Day Trip

You don’t need to be a kayaking expert to do this tour, but some prior experience of kayaking is recommended. Physically, the tour is not at all demanding, as the Danube has a steady current that assists our movement downstream, but you should be comfortable in aquatic environments and a good swimmer. We use stable kayaks, and our RLSS-certified guide provides a full safety briefing prior to launching.

Yes. We will pick you up directly from your hotel in Vkienna and drive together to the tour starting point in the Wachau. The journey takes just over an hour, and allows us to get to know each other and discuss the day before we hit the water.

It’s important to travel light. Wear comfortable, quick drying sportswear and bring a spare top (just in case!). We provide waterproof dry bags for your phone and valuables. Don’t forget sunscreen and a hat—the reflection off the Danube is beautiful but bright!

Safety is our priority, so naturally we keep a close eye on the weather forecast leading up to the tour date. If conditions on the Danube are unsafe, we pivot to an expanded Wachau Cultural & Wine Hike, ensuring you still experience the beauty of the valley, the ruins, and the wine cellars.

We’ve curated this experience so you don’t have to worry about logistics. Just after our wine tasting we’ll stop at a traditional riverside spot for a local lunch (not included). We also recommend bringing small snacks and a reusable water bottle, which can be stored in the waterproof dry bags we provide.
