Wachau Valley, Lower Austria
The Wachau Valley is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located around one hour west of Vienna, in Lower Austria. The valley stretches for 33 kms between the towns of Melk and Krems along the Danube River. Its dramatic cliffs and steeply terraced vineyards create a stunning backdrop for a great day out.
Possibilities include wandering through charming medieval towns like Dürnstein, known for its blue church tower, historic cobblestone streets and the famous Dürnstein castle where Richard the Lionheart was famously imprisoned; visiting Melk Abbey, a magnificent example of Baroque architecture perched high above the Danube, or discovering Spitz an der Donau, a typical Wachau wine village close to many wonderful hiking and biking trails. Mikulov, Moravia, Czech Republic

Mikulov is considerably easier to visit from Vienna than Prague, as it's just over one hour of the Austrian capital.
With a rich history dating back to the 13th century, in Mikulov you can wander through the cobbled streets and pastel-colored buildings of the old town, explore its impressive Jewish Quarter and Baroque synagogue, hike up its Holy Hill for impressive views over the Palava Hills, and explore the town's renowned vineyards which dot the surrounding countryside.
