Learn about its famous imperial history, as well as the era of 'Red Vienna' during the city's heyday in the 1910's when so many of the 20th century's most influential figures called Vienna home (think Freud, Klimt, Mahler, Trotsky, Schiele and Hitler). From gothic splendor to Baroque majesty, Vienna's innerstadt (city centre) is also an architectural gem spanning centuries of different governments and ruling elites. So why not take a wander with our certified Austria guide and art historian, Jan, and let us take you on a journey from past to present...

This location is very easy to reach either on foot if you are staying in the centre, or via the u-bahn (underground/metro) station ‘Stephansdom’ on the U1 red line (more details & map below). Please arrive here five minutes before the confirmed start time of your tour to avoid delays! After a brief introduction and an overview of our itinerary from your guide, Jan, we’ll start walking…

The tour conveniently ends at the Vienna State Opera on the Ringstrasse. This is right at the heart of the city and is connected by several tram lines and three of the city’s u-bahn lines at Karlsplatz, so wherever you’re staying, it will be a short ride back to your hotel. This is also the prefect spot for following up on our recommendations to further explore Vienna’s sights and coffee houses, most of which are within easy walking distance.

Vienna City Walking Tour Directions

The easiest way to get to the tour meeting point at St Stephen's Cathedral is on the U1 (red) underground/metro line and the station 'Stephansplatz'. Alternatively, if you're staying in the city center then you could just as easily walk there. Look for the massive cathedral with its gothic era steeple, you literally cannot miss it! Jan is the viking looking guy standing just outside the main entrance of the cathedral, holding a golden umbrella 🙂
